Background
Kimi is a chatbot built by Moonshot AI. Its first step in the direction of an assistant that carries out work rather than only answering questions was Kimi-Researcher, an autonomous research agent released in June 2025, three months before OK Computer[1].
An agent, in the sense used here, is software that takes a goal rather than a single question: it breaks the goal into steps, uses tools, and hands back a finished piece of work instead of a paragraph of text. Kimi-Researcher was built for research tasks. OK Computer takes the same shape but places it inside Kimi itself as a mode the user selects[1][2].
The launch
Kimi's help center dates the release to 26 September 2025 and describes OK Computer as the first agent product mode in Kimi[2]. Moonshot AI launched it in September 2025 as an agent mode within the chatbot[1]. The two accounts agree on the month; the help center supplies the day.
The naming is a departure from the pattern set by Kimi-Researcher. Instead of being presented as a separate research tool, OK Computer is described as a mode — a way of using the existing assistant, entered when a task is large enough to need several steps.
What it makes
Given a prompt, OK Computer builds multi-page websites and editable slides[1]. Its outputs span text, audio, images and video[1]. The help center lists website generation and PPT creation among the product lines available in Agent mode[2].
"Editable" is the operative word for the slides: the result is a file the user can keep changing, not a fixed picture of a slide. The same logic applies to the websites, which are produced as multi-page sites rather than as a single page of text. The list of output types matters because it puts documents, sound, pictures and moving images in one place, all requested in the same way — by describing what is wanted.
Spreadsheets, and a discrepancy
Kimi's help center says the agent can help organize 1,000 rows in Excel[2]. A Wikipedia entry on Kimi separately describes OK Computer as handling up to 1 million rows of input data at once[1]. The two figures come from different sources and do not match: one refers to rows the agent helps organize in a spreadsheet, the other to rows of input data. Until a single specification is published, the spreadsheet capacity should be treated as unconfirmed.
This is a common situation when a product ships quickly — documentation written by the vendor and descriptions written by outsiders diverge, and the vendor's own page is generally the more conservative of the two.
Why the mode matters
The interval between the two products is short: Kimi-Researcher in June 2025, OK Computer three months later[1]. Read together, they show a chat assistant being extended in the direction of finished deliverables — a research report on one side, a website or a slide deck on the other.
The help center's framing is also telling. By listing website generation and PPT creation as product lines inside Agent mode, Kimi presents OK Computer not as one feature but as a family of task types that share the same entry point[2]. A user who wants a site and a user who wants slides start in the same place and describe what they want; the mode decides what to build. That arrangement is what makes the mode a product line rather than a single tool, and it is the part of the launch most likely to shape what Kimi offers next.
