What it is
AgiBot, known in Chinese as Zhiyuan Robotics, is a Chinese company working on humanoid robots — machines built to move and manipulate objects in spaces designed for people. It works on both the complete robot and the hardware inside it, including the joint modules that drive its limbs. Humanoid robots are hard to build because a machine that stands, walks and handles objects needs compact, powerful actuators and software that can turn perception into movement; a company that makes both the body and the control software can tune them together.
Origins
AgiBot was founded at the end of February 2023 [1]. Its founder is Peng Zhihui, who is known online as Zhihui Jun. He joined Huawei's "genius youth" recruitment programme in 2020 and left at the end of 2022 to start the company [1]. The move from a large telecommunications company into robotics start-up life drew attention in Chinese tech circles, in part because that recruitment programme selects a small number of young engineers on high salaries.
Funding and backers
After it was founded, AgiBot received investment from BV Baidu Ventures, and Forbes listed it as a unicorn [1]. The company completed seven funding rounds in the 15 months after it started in February 2023 [2]. Jiang Qingsong, a partner and the company's marketing vice president, said AgiBot planned to start its B round in early 2025 [2].
Products
On 18 August 2024 AgiBot released five commercial humanoid products across its Yuanzheng and Lingxi families [2]. Rather than a single demonstration machine, the company presented a line of products intended for sale, which is an unusual step for a humanoid robot developer at that stage. AgiBot said it expected shipments above 300 units in 2024 [2].
On the hardware side, AgiBot developed PowerFlow joint modules, which it said deliver peak torque above 350 N·m at a weight of 1.6 kg [3]. Joint modules are the packaged motors, gears and sensors that act as a robot's muscles; torque relative to weight is one of the constraints that decides how strong a robot can be without becoming too heavy to move. AgiBot said it aimed to keep the hardware cost of its humanoid robot under 200,000 yuan [3]. Cost is one of the main barriers keeping humanoid robots out of ordinary factories and workplaces, so a stated target of this kind is a statement about the market the company is aiming at rather than about laboratory performance.
Roadmap
AgiBot defined a G1 to G5 roadmap for embodied intelligence [2]. The steps run from basic automation, through general atomic skills and end-to-end manipulation skills, then to end-to-end manipulation models, and finally to AGI [2]. In other words, the plan starts with robots that repeat fixed motions, moves toward robots that can pick up a wide range of single actions, then toward systems that learn whole manipulation tasks from data rather than being programmed step by step, and ends with a general-purpose intelligence.
Where it sits
AgiBot belongs to a group of companies that formed in the early 2020s to try to turn humanoid robots from research demonstrations into products, and it is unusual in combining a well-known founder, rapid fundraising and an explicit cost target. How far along the G1 to G5 path any of these machines actually is cannot be read off the roadmap itself; the roadmap describes intent, and the products released in 2024 are the first public evidence of what the company could ship.
