Perplexity raises $500 million at a $14 billion valuation

In June 2025 Perplexity closed a $500 million round at a $14 billion valuation, up from about $520 million in January 2024, as its annual recurring revenue grew from single-digit millions toward $200 million.

Background

Perplexity, an AI-powered search engine, was already a heavily funded startup before 2025. In January 2024 it raised $73.6 million in a round led by IVP, with NEA, Databricks Ventures, Elad Gil, Tobi Lutke, Nat Friedman, Guillermo Rauch, Nvidia and Jeff Bezos taking part, at a post-money valuation of $520 million. Its annual recurring revenue at the time was between $5 million and $10 million.[3]

Two terms carry most of the weight in stories like this. A funding round is a sale of newly issued shares to investors, and the post-money valuation is what the company is reckoned to be worth once that money is on its balance sheet. Annual recurring revenue, or ARR, is subscription revenue counted as a yearly rate; investors watch it because it measures money that arrives regularly rather than in one-off bursts.

By December 2024, Perplexity's valuation had reached about $9 billion.[1]

The 2025 round

In June 2025 the company closed a $500 million funding round at a $14 billion valuation.[1]

More detail on the financing came later. On 10 September 2025, TechCrunch reported that Bloomberg had described the July 2025 financing as an extension of a previous $500 million round completed earlier that year at a $14 billion valuation and led by Accel.[2] An extension of this kind adds capital to a round that has already closed, at the same price, instead of opening a new round at a new valuation.

The same report, citing PitchBook data, said Perplexity had raised $1.5 billion in total funding since its founding.[2]

The revenue behind the valuation

Investors pricing a loss-making AI company look at revenue growth as much as at the present loss. TechCrunch reported that a source put Perplexity's annual recurring revenue at approaching $200 million, after the company's head of communications told Business Insider it was more than $150 million.[2] For comparison, ARR had been between $5 million and $10 million in January 2024.[3]

The two figures — a $14 billion valuation and revenue below $200 million — describe the same bet: that a product used by many people for search-like questions can eventually be monetised at a scale that justifies the price paid years earlier. Nothing in the reported numbers says when, or whether, that happens.

Later valuations

The valuation did not stay at $14 billion. By September 2025 Perplexity was valued at $20 billion,[1] and in early 2026 a Series E-6 round put it at $21.21 billion.[1] Read as a sequence, the price rose roughly fortyfold between January 2024 and early 2026, with the largest single jump coming between January and December 2024.

Why it matters

For Perplexity the money is working capital. Answering questions with a large language model costs compute on every query, and running that at consumer scale is expensive in a way that ordinary software is not; a $500 million round buys years of that spending at a known price, which matters more than the headline valuation for a company that has to pay for servers before it collects subscriptions.

For the wider market, the round is a reading on how much capital investors were willing to commit to companies building AI applications on top of other people's models, and at what price they were willing to do it. The backer list from the January 2024 round shows the same pattern at a much smaller scale: venture firms, corporate investors including Nvidia and Databricks Ventures, and several well-known individual investors and founders.[3] The gap between that round's $520 million valuation and the $14 billion figure eighteen months later is the clearest single measure of how quickly that appetite changed.
