On 29 June 2026 the Council of the EU gave final approval to a regulation streamlining the bloc's AI rules, carried in the Omnibus VII package; the amendments entered into force on 27 July 2026.

On 8 December 2023 negotiators for the Council and the European Parliament reached a provisional agreement on the AI Act, the file the Council described as the first rules for AI in the world; formal adoption followed in May 2024.
