What Walker S1 is

Walker S1 is an industrial humanoid robot from the Chinese robotics company UBTECH, released on 14 October 2024 [1]. It belongs to the Walker S series. According to the China Securities Journal, the robot stands 172 cm tall and weighs 76 kg — roughly the size and mass of an adult worker — and can walk stably while carrying a 15 kg payload [2]. Huanqiu's report describes the same capability more simply: it can walk while carrying a 15 kg load [1].

Sensing and the head

The robot is built for 360-degree multimodal perception. Its head is a single integrated design rather than a frame with parts bolted on, and it combines dual fisheye cameras with 3D stereo vision [1]. The two kinds of camera do different jobs: a fisheye lens takes in a very wide field of view in one shot, while stereo vision uses two viewpoints to estimate how far away an object is. Together they give the robot a picture of the space around it. A factory floor is a crowded place — machines, racks and walking people all enter the field of view — so a robot that cannot see in all directions either moves too timidly to be useful or risks collisions.

Joints, hands and manipulation

Walker S1 uses an integrated joint with a rotary drive [1]. In an integrated joint, the motor, transmission and sensing needed to drive one axis are packaged as a single module, so a limb is assembled from a few units instead of many separate parts. Its humanoid dexterous hand carries six array-type tactile pressure sensors [1]. Touch matters for grasping: a hand that cannot feel contact pressure has to grip cautiously or risk crushing what it holds, whereas pressure sensors let it regulate force. The hand is paired with a full-stack dexterous manipulation strategy library — a set of control strategies the robot can call on for different grasping and manipulation tasks [1].

Factory trials

The deployments described at launch were in car manufacturing. At BYD's factory, Walker S1 was given handling tasks and worked alongside L4 unmanned logistics vehicles, unmanned forklifts, industrial mobile robots and a manufacturing management system [1]. That list is worth reading closely: the humanoid does not work alone. It enters a plant where automated carts, forklifts and mobile robots already move material, coordinated by a single software system, and it has to fit into that arrangement.

At Audi FAW's plant in Changchun, the robot performed air-conditioning leak detection, a check that requires millimetre-level precision, and its visual recognition ran in under 70 milliseconds [2]. In leak detection a missed fault often only surfaces later, when the vehicle is further down the line, so precision and recognition speed are the measures that count.

Where it sits

By October 2024, the Walker S series had received more than 500 intent orders from carmakers [1]. An intent order expresses an intention to buy rather than a firm contract, so the figure reflects interest from the automotive industry rather than completed sales. What the Walker S1 launch shows is the direction the humanoid robot business was taking at the time: machines built at human scale, sold to car plants, and introduced first into clearly defined plant jobs such as material handling and quality checks.
