What UBTECH does
UBTECH Robotics is a robot company whose shares trade on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the stock code 9880.HK [1][2]. It was established in March 2012, and in that same year it began the research, development and design of robots [1][2]. Its work has centred on humanoid robots — machines built to a humanlike shape, typically with a head, two arms and two legs — and the company has moved over time from small humanoids to full-size machines meant for factory work [1].
From Alpha to Walker
UBTECH developed its first small humanoid robot, Alpha, in 2014 [1]. Robots of that size generally do not do heavy physical work; they are built mainly for interaction, demonstration and teaching, and a small humanoid is a common first product for a company entering the field.
In 2018 the company released its first-generation humanoid Walker, followed by a second-generation Walker in 2019 [1]. Full-size humanoids raise problems that desktop-sized machines do not: keeping a two-legged body balanced while standing and walking, driving many joints at once, and coordinating the whole body so that it can carry and move objects.
In 2021 UBTECH launched Walker X, a new generation of the Walker robot, and began commercializing it [1]. Commercialization means the machine is no longer only a demonstration unit on a stand; it is offered to customers and delivered for use.
Listing
On 29 December 2023, UBTECH listed on the main board of the Hong Kong Stock Exchange under the stock code 9880.HK [1][2]. According to the company, it became the first humanoid robot company listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange [1].
Toward industrial work
In 2024 UBTECH released Walker S1, an industrial humanoid robot, and the Walker S series began training in multiple automotive factories [1]. Training a robot inside a factory means letting it repeatedly carry out tasks such as moving and handling parts on a real production line while data is collected and control strategies are adjusted. Unlike a laboratory demonstration, this has to cope with production tempo, safety rules and the demand for stable, repeated operation.
In 2025 the company launched Walker S2 and began mass production and delivery of the robot in November 2025 [1]. Shanghai Securities News reported that the first several hundred Walker S2 units had entered mass production delivery, and that orders for the Walker series had exceeded 800 million yuan since the start of 2025 [3]. China Automotive News reported that Walker series orders reached 1.3 billion yuan in 2025, that monthly capacity for Walker S2 had passed 300 units, and that full-year deliveries were expected to be above 500 units [4]. The two reports describe order value and capacity at different moments and on different bases.
A public appearance
UBTECH said that three Walker S2 units, representing Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau, struck eight bronze chime bells at the opening ceremony of the 15th National Games of China [1]. Chime bells are a set of bronze bells of different sizes that sound different notes when struck, and playing them requires a steady, precisely placed arm movement.
Where it sits
The sequence from Alpha to the Walker generations to the S series traces a path common in humanoid robotics: build a machine that can move and be shown, put it into real workplaces as a pilot, and then talk about capacity and delivery. UBTECH's own account and the 2025 press reports place it at the third stage, with volume production and order figures attached to an industrial humanoid rather than to a demonstration model [1][3][4]. The order, capacity and delivery numbers above come from the company and from those two publications.
