What XPENG is
XPENG is a Chinese company that designs, develops, manufactures and markets smart electric vehicles. Two of the systems that shape its cars — the advanced driver-assistance system and the intelligent in-car operating system — are developed in house rather than bought in [1]. The company says it was founded in 2014 and is headquartered in Guangzhou [1]. Its vehicles are mainly built at its own facilities in Zhaoqing and Guangzhou, both in Guangdong province [1]. It also keeps key offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Silicon Valley and Amsterdam [1], a spread that says something about how much of the work is software and electronics rather than assembly alone.
Founding and listings
XPENG was co-founded in 2014 by He Xiaopeng, Xia Heng and He Tao [4]. The company trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker XPEV and on the Hong Kong Exchange under 9868 [1]; it says it listed in New York on 27 August 2020 and in Hong Kong on 7 July 2021 [2]. A listing in both markets gives a company access to international and mainland investors at once, and it also means two sets of disclosure rules apply to the same business.
A humanoid robot called IRON
On 6 November 2024, at its AI Day event, XPENG unveiled a humanoid robot named IRON [3]. The company said IRON had been developed over five years and has more than 60 joints and 200 degrees of freedom, and that it shares technology with its AI vehicles [3]. Building a robot on technology already developed for cars is a way to reuse work on perception, motion control and computing rather than starting from nothing.
At its 2025 AI Day, XPENG said it had built its first embodied intelligence data factory in Guangzhou to address the shortage of robot training data [2]. Training a robot requires records of how bodies move and interact with the physical world, which are much harder to collect than text or images. The company also said it would open the IRON software development kit to developers [2], and that Baosteel would become an ecosystem partner for the IRON project, with the robot to be deployed for inspection work in complex industrial settings [2]. XPENG said it aimed to achieve volume production of high-order humanoid robots by the end of 2026 [2].
Driving models and robotaxis
XPENG unveiled a second-generation VLA model at its 2025 AI Day, saying it removed the language-translation step and generated action commands directly from visual signals [2]. Driver-assistance systems normally pass what the car sees through intermediate representations before deciding what to do; skipping a translation step is meant to shorten that chain from seeing to acting. The company also said it would launch three Robotaxi models in 2026 and start Robotaxi trial operations [2]. A robotaxi service places different demands on a car company from selling cars to individuals: vehicles have to run without a driver, be monitored remotely and be maintained as a fleet.
Where it sits
XPENG is best understood as a carmaker that treats driving assistance, in-car software and now robotics as one body of in-house AI work. The advanced driver-assistance system and the in-car operating system are developed by the company itself [1]; the humanoid robot shares technology with its AI vehicles [3]; the data factory in Guangzhou exists because robot training data is scarce [2]. The vehicle business, the robot programme and the robotaxi plans therefore rest on overlapping engineering, and the company has set 2026 as the year in which both high-order humanoid robot volume production and Robotaxi trial operations are meant to begin [2].
Its manufacturing base in Guangdong and its offices in Beijing, Shanghai, Silicon Valley and Amsterdam place it inside both the Chinese electric-vehicle supply chain and the wider international AI talent market [1]. How far the robot and robotaxi programmes progress will show whether technology developed for cars carries over to machines that drive themselves and machines that walk.
