Background
On 6 November 2024, XPENG held its AI Day at South China University of Technology in Guangzhou, with the event livestreamed globally[1]. A humanoid robot is a machine built to roughly human proportions so that it can work with tools, spaces and equipment designed for people rather than adapted for a machine, and the company used the event to present work in that direction alongside its vehicle technologies.
What was announced
XPENG unveiled a humanoid robot called IRON at the event[1]. According to the company, the robot has more than 60 joints and 200 degrees of freedom[1]. XPENG also said that IRON shares technology with its AI vehicles and had already been integrated into its daily operations, and that the robot would initially focus on internal applications such as factories and stores[1].
IRON was not the only item on the agenda. At the same event XPENG presented the Kunpeng Super Electric System, the Turing AI intelligent driving system and XPENG AIOS[1].
Key details
The figures reported afterwards differed between accounts. China Securities Journal reported that the robot had 62 degrees of freedom in its body and 15 in its hands[2]. Global Times, citing China Economic Times, reported that IRON stands 178 cm tall, weighs 70 kg and uses a 3,000 TOPS Turing chip[3].
A degree of freedom is one independent axis of motion. An elbow that only bends is one degree of freedom; a wrist that can bend in two directions and also rotate adds three. A machine with dozens of them can place its arms and fingers in far more positions than a simpler robot, but the control problem grows with the count: making many joints act together is as much a software task as a hardware one. TOPS, trillions of operations per second, is a rough measure of how much arithmetic a chip can perform in a given time and is commonly quoted for chips meant to run neural networks on a device rather than in a data centre, so the 3,000 TOPS figure describes the computing available on the robot itself[3].
The same report said IRON was doing trial work at XPENG's Guangzhou factory on the P7+ line[3], which matches the company's stated plan of starting with its own factories and stores[1].
Why it matters
The announcement places a humanoid robot in the same technical line as XPENG's driving and vehicle software: the company's claim is that the robot reuses technology developed for its AI vehicles, rather than being a separate effort[1]. Having the robot do trial work on a car production line also puts it inside a setting the company already runs, which is where it said the first applications would be, instead of in outside customers' hands[1][3]. What the event did not settle is how far the robot has moved past trial work: the specifications came from the company and from press reports of the launch, and the degrees-of-freedom figures given by XPENG and by China Securities Journal do not match, leaving the exact configuration to be confirmed as the machine is deployed more widely[1][2].
