Meta acquires AI coding startup Conductor

In early November 2026 Meta acquired Conductor, a startup whose platform runs multiple AI coding agents in parallel workspaces. Conductor's cloud service was set to shut down on 20 November 2026.

Background

A coding agent is a program that takes a request written in plain language — fix this failing test, add this feature — and carries out the work inside a codebase itself, editing files and running commands rather than only suggesting text. By the time of the deal, Meta already shipped such a tool: it launched its own coding agent, Muse Code, in August 2026, and its Muse agents had passed 10 million users [1]. Conductor, the startup Meta went on to buy, attacked the same problem from a different angle, running several agents side by side instead of one at a time.

The deal

Conductor's founder and chief executive Charlie Holtz announced the acquisition on the company blog in early November 2026, and Meta confirmed it to TechCrunch. No terms were disclosed [1]. The announcement came after a short life for the company and only months after its product had reached users.

What Conductor built

Conductor was founded in 2024 and launched its core product only in the summer before the acquisition [1].

The platform deploys multiple agents into parallel workspaces. Rather than queueing tasks behind a single assistant in one chat window, a user can start several agents at once, each working on its own copy of the code and reporting back. That arrangement suits work that splits naturally into independent pieces — one agent tracing a bug while another writes tests, for instance — because the agents do not have to take turns on the same files.

Conductor did not train its own models. Its agents came from labs such as Anthropic and OpenAI [1], and the company's contribution was the layer around them: the scheduling, workspaces and coordination that let several of them run without interfering with one another. Agentic teams could run in the cloud, locally on a user's own machine, or through a user's phone [1], so the same set of agents could be reached from a desk or away from it.

Shutdown

Buying a company does not keep its product running. Conductor said its cloud service would shut down on 20 November 2026, after which it would begin deleting user cloud data [1]. For customers who had built the tool into their daily work, that left a short window between the announcement in early November and the closure later the same month.

Where the team lands

Holtz said he was looking forward to working with Alexandr Wang, Meta's chief AI officer, and Nat Friedman, head of product at Meta Superintelligence Labs [1]. The public statements dwelt on the people involved rather than on the software, and the two names he cited sit inside the part of Meta responsible for its frontier AI work.

Why it matters

A few dates frame the story: a company founded in 2024, a product that launched only in the summer before the acquisition, and a cloud service set to close on 20 November 2026 [1]. Conductor's platform was built on other labs' models — from Anthropic and OpenAI — and its value lay in coordinating those models rather than in producing them [1]. Meta, which had shipped a coding agent of its own and counted more than 10 million users across its Muse agents, bought that coordination layer and the team behind it [1].

The deal is a compact record of how the coding-agent market looked at that moment: small teams assembling other companies' models into working products, and large labs buying the ones they find useful.
