ByteDance releases Seedance 2.0, prompting a Hollywood copyright backlash

ByteDance's Seedance 2.0 video model went live on 12 February 2026. Viral clips drew copyright complaints from the Motion Picture Association and Hollywood studios, and ByteDance later paused the global launch, according to The Information.

Background

Seedance 2.0 is a video generation model from ByteDance. It went live on 12 February 2026.[1] Generative video models turn written instructions into moving footage. Seedance 2.0 generates audio and video together, and it accepts text, image, audio and video references as inputs.[2]

A reference input gives the model material to build on, such as a picture that sets how a character should look or a short sound that sets the mood. Using several kinds of reference together lets a creator guide the result more closely than a text description alone.

What happened

After launch, short clips made with the model spread quickly online. The most widely shared included a fight between Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise, and a version of Friends in which the characters appeared as otters.[3] The response from the entertainment industry was fast. The Motion Picture Association denounced the model. Disney sent a cease-and-desist letter on 13 February, and Paramount Skydance sent one around 15 February.[3] A cease-and-desist letter is a formal demand that the recipient stop an activity that infringes the sender's rights.

Key details

On 16 February ByteDance said it would strengthen safeguards on the model. According to The Information, the company later paused the global launch.[3][1]

Impact

The dispute escalated on 16 March 2026, when Senators Marsha Blackburn and Peter Welch urged ByteDance CEO Liang Rubo to shut the app down. They called it “the most glaring example of copyright infringement from a ByteDance product to date.”[3][1] The sequence ran from a promise of stronger safeguards, to a paused global launch, to a public demand for a shutdown. It shows how quickly the output of a video model can draw complaints from rights holders, and how the response can escalate from safeguards to a pause to calls for removal.
