Apple requires 18+ ratings for dating and AI companion apps

On 2 November 2026 Apple told developers that apps with dating or romantic features, including AI companion apps, must carry an 18+ rating, with new content descriptors required from 16 November.

Background

The change follows Apple's global rollout of age assurance technology and added parental controls [1]. It also arrives in a market where AI companion apps already reach a large audience: as of the previous summer, the top AI companion apps across the Apple App Store and Google Play had been downloaded 220 million times worldwide [1].

What Apple announced

On 2 November 2026, Apple told developers that it will require an 18+ rating for all apps offering dating or romantic relationship features [1]. From 16 November 2026, developers must include new content descriptors so that an app's age rating reflects its features [1].

An age rating is the label shown on an app's store page. It does more than inform a shopper: ratings are what device- and account-level restrictions are usually built on, which is why the descriptors behind the number matter as much as the number itself. A rating tied to specific features gives parents and platform tools something concrete to act on; a rating that reflects only a broad category does not.

Who is covered

The rule is not limited to dating apps. It also reaches AI companion apps that engage in sexual or romantic content, including apps where that is one of many features [1]. That last part widens the set of affected products: an app whose main purpose is something else, but which includes romantic interaction among its features, falls inside the scope as described. For developers of such apps, the rating decision is no longer settled by the app's headline category.

Apple will further require apps to declare when they share a user's real-world location with another person or group [1]. Location sharing is a separate question from content. Real-world location can reveal where a person lives or spends time, and passing it to another person or to a group is a different act from a service holding that data internally. Requiring a declaration makes that behaviour visible in a place users and parents can see, rather than only inside the app.

Why it matters

Two things stand out. First, the 18+ requirement places dating apps and AI companion apps under the same age bar, so a newer, fast-growing category is treated with the same threshold as an established one [1]. Second, the content descriptors change what a rating means: instead of one number standing in for a whole app, the rating is meant to correspond to the features the app actually offers [1].

The two requirements are also of different kinds. An 18+ rating is a threshold; a content descriptor is a description. A threshold decides who may install an app, while a description tells users and parents what they are installing. Apple's age assurance technology and parental controls are the mechanisms that act on the label; the label itself is what the new rules standardise [1].

For developers, the practical effect is a review of what the app does rather than what it is called. An app that mixes companion chat with other functions has to be rated for the companion features it contains, and an app that shares location with other users has to say so. The scale of the affected category is not small: the 220 million downloads recorded for leading AI companion apps across the two major stores show how many people had already installed this kind of software before the rules were announced [1].
