Background
A world model is an AI system that learns how an environment behaves, so that it can predict what happens next or generate plausible states of that environment. Work in this area splits into two broad directions: generating digital content such as scenes and video, and modelling how a physical system responds to actions, which is the kind of capability that robot control depends on. Shengshu Technology works on this layer of the stack, and its Vidu line of models is the company's public-facing product.[1]
What happened
On 10 April 2026, Shengshu announced that it had closed a Series B round of nearly 2 billion yuan.[1] Alibaba Cloud led the round.[1]
The investor list mixed strategic and financial backers. China Internet Investment Fund, Jiu'an Haitang, TAL Education and Guanghe Venture Capital invested strategically.[1] Several existing shareholders followed on, including Xinglian Capital, Datai Capital, Jianfa Emerging Investment, BV Baidu Ventures and Zhuoyuan Asia.[1]
Where the money goes
The company said the proceeds go to its foundation world model, which it divides into two families: world generation models on the digital side and world action models on the physical side.[1] The distinction maps onto the two directions described above. Generation models are trained to produce coherent digital environments and scenes; action models are trained to represent how a physical body's surroundings change in response to what it does, and to support the control decisions that follow.
Putting both under a single "foundation" label implies shared underlying machinery rather than two separate projects — the same pretraining and representation work feeding a content product on one side and embodied systems on the other.
The product side
Shengshu said that Vidu Q3, released as part of the Vidu line, reached first place worldwide on the Artificial Analysis leaderboard after its release.[1] The company also said Vidu had been listed on Alibaba Cloud's Bailian platform.[1] That listing matters beyond distribution: it places the model inside a major cloud vendor's model marketplace, where developers can call it through the same interface as other models. It also gives the round's lead investor a direct commercial relationship with the product, not just an equity stake.
On the physical side, the company said it had signed strategic agreements with several humanoid robot and embodied-AI companies.[1] Such agreements are the usual route by which a model developer gets access to hardware and real interaction data, which action models need in order to be trained and evaluated.
Key details at a glance
- Round size: nearly 2 billion yuan, announced 10 April 2026.[1]
- Lead investor: Alibaba Cloud.[1]
- Strategic investors: China Internet Investment Fund, Jiu'an Haitang, TAL Education, Guanghe Venture Capital.[1]
- Following existing shareholders: Xinglian Capital, Datai Capital, Jianfa Emerging Investment, BV Baidu Ventures, Zhuoyuan Asia.[1]
- Stated use of funds: foundation world model, split into world generation models and world action models.[1]
Why it matters
Three things stand out in the announcement. The first is scale: a single round of nearly 2 billion yuan is a large commitment to a research direction that has not yet settled into a standard product shape. The second is the identity of the lead investor. A cloud provider leading rather than merely participating ties the company's training and serving needs to a specific infrastructure partner, and the Bailian listing makes that tie visible to developers.[1] The third is the shape of the plan itself. By naming generation and action models as two halves of one foundation model, Shengshu is describing a strategy in which digital content and embodied AI share a core, with humanoid robot partners supplying the physical end.[1]
The open questions are the ones the announcement does not answer: how far the shared core actually extends, and how quickly the robot agreements turn into training data and shipped capability. What the round establishes is that the company has the capital and the partners to pursue both at once.
